" judges of the Hellenes", name of the arbiters at the Olympic Games (Pi.), also name of a martial court in Sparta (X.); Έλληνο-ταμίαι pl. name of the treasurers of the Delic-Attic Confederacy (Att.). As 2. member in Πανέλληνες `Panhellenes' (Β 530 beside Άχαιοί, Hes. Op. 528, Archil. 52,); cf. below; φιλ-έλλην `friend of the Hellenes' (Ion.-Att.), μισ-έλλην `enemy of the Hellenes' (X.).

Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]

Etymology: Like most names of lands and peoples Έλλάς and Ε῝λληνες have no etymology. - As formation in - άς (cf. Τρωάς, Φθιάς, Λευκάς etc.; Schwyzer 507f., Chantr. Form. 356) Έλλάς supposes a noun (Sommer Münch. Stud. z. Sprachwiss. 4, 1ff.). Also for Ε῝λληνες a noun will have been the basis; the deviant intonation (cf. Άθαμᾶνες, Άκαρνᾶνες, Δυμᾶνες etc., which is also found in Ἴωνες (s. v.), is mostly explained from Παν-έλληνες (like πάν-δεινος, παν-άγαθος a. o.; but Παν-αχαιοί Β 404 etc.!). The ending -ᾱν- is of course Pre-Greek. - Beside Ε῝λληνες we find Ἔλλοπες (like Δρύοπες a. o.) in Έλλοπία name of the region of Dodona (Hes. Fr. 134, 1) and of northern Euboea (Hdt. 8, 23; note the suffix - οπ-); since Arist. ( Mete. 352a 34) the area of Dodona and the basin of the Acheloos was seen as the land of origin of the Hellenes, the ἀρχαία Έλλάς. The basis of Έλλάς and Ε῝λληνες prob. is Έλλοί (Pi. Fr. 59), after H. = Ε῝λληνες οἱ ἐν Δωδώνῃ, καὶ οἱ ἱερεῖς; but perh. it is juist the consequence of the reading σ' Έλλοί for Σελλοί in Π 234, s. Leumann Hom. Wörter 40. It is obvious, to connect the Ε῝λληνες also with the Σελλοι, who live also around Dodona; Ε῝λληνες and Έλλάς would have lost the σ- through Greek development. - Further unknown, s. Wilamowitz on Eur. Inferior). Ro 15:19 ἀπὸ Ἰερουσαλὴμ καὶ κύκλῳ μέχρι τοῦ Ἰ. is the only reference extant to missionary activity of Paul in this part of the world. Yet in view of the close connection of Illyricum with Macedonia (Appian, Bell. Civ. 3, 63 §258; 4, 75 §317 τῆς Ἰλλυρίδος ἐπὶ τῇ Μακεδονίᾳ; 5, 145 §602) there is no difficulty in assuming that Paul visited Ill. from Mac.—WWeber, Untersuchungen z. The whole law (as the expr. εἴ τι ἑτέρα ἐντολή indicates not limited to a narrow list of commandments), acc. to Ro 13:9. In what is prob. a play on words (s. 2a and b), Gal 5:14 (s. 2a below) is summed up in the λόγος as expressed in Lev 19:18.—That which God has created ἁγιάζεται διὰ λόγου θεοῦ 1 Ti 4:5; in line w. the context, this hardly refers to God’s creative word (so SibOr 3, 20; PtK 2; πάντα γὰρ λόγῳ ποιήσας ὁ θεός Theoph. In these places and many others ὁ λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ is simply the Christian message, the gospel: Lk 5:1; 8:11, 21; 11:28 (Simplicius in Epict. p. 1, 20 μὴ μόνον ἀκουόντων ἀλλὰ πασχόντων καὶ ὑπὸ τῶν λόγων=let the message have its effect on oneself); Ac 6:2 (s. καταλείπω 7c; for prob. commercial metaph. s. 2a below); 13:44 v.l. (for κυρίου); 16:32 v.l.; 1 Cor 14:36; 2 Cor 2:17; 4:2; Col 1:25; 1 Pt 1:23; Rv 1:9; 6:9; 20:4; IPhld 11:1. ③ the independent personified expression of God, the Logos. Our lit. shows traces of a way of thinking that was widespread in contemporary syncretism, as well as in Jewish wisdom lit. and Philo, the most prominent feature of which is the concept of the Logos, the independent, personified ‘Word’ (of God): GJs 11:2 (word of the angel to Mary) συνλήμψῃ ἐκ Λόγου αὐτοῦ (sc. τοῦ πάντων Δεσπότου). J 1:1abc, 14 (cp. Just., A I, 23, 2; Mel., P. 9, 61 and oft. by all apolog., exc.. Ar.). It is the distinctive teaching of the Fourth Gospel that this divine ‘Word’ took on human form in a historical person, that is, in Jesus (s.
